SUMMARY:The Springtails and Gerald Ross: Twin Bill
DESCRIPTION:There are many similarities between Hawaii and Michigan: they have palm trees\, we have pine. We have the Great Lakes\, they have the Pacific Ocean. (Ok\, maybe I’m stretching this a bit…) But\, both have vibrant ukulele communities\, celebrating the aloha sprit of the diminutive yet dynamic “jumping flea”. \nMusic is the Foundation\, in tandem with the Ten Pound Fiddle is pleased to present some of The Great Uke State’s finest ukulele musicians – Lansing’s own The Springtails and Detroit native Gerald Ross at the Old Town Cultural Center. \nThe Springtails are a Lansing Michigan-based band featuring swing-era style vocals and eclectic acoustic instrumentation. Vocalist and songwriter\, Julianna Wilson\, accompanies herself on ukulele or upright bass. Her partner and multi-instrumentalist\, Andy Wilson provides harmony vocals\, harmonicas and cornet. \n“Listen to The Springtails. The writing\, the virtuosity\, the charm — it is unique and infectious.” – Matt Watroba \nhttps://www.thespringtails.com/ \n\n  \n  \nGerald Ross is comfortable with just about every type of “roots” music there is\, from western swing\, bluegrass\, Hawaiian\, blues\, jug band music\, jazz standards\, Tin Pan Alley\, New Orleans rhythms to boogie-woogie\, and he plays it all on guitar\, lap steel\, Dobro\, ukulele\, and baritone ukulele. \nHe’s performed in concert with Bonnie Raitt\, Arlo Guthrie\, Doc Watson\, Johnny Gimble\, Riders In The Sky\, Brownie McGhee and many others. He appears in the award winning film documentaries “The Mighty Uke” and the PBS syndicated “Wheatland – The First 40 Years.” Gerald won the Solo Artist Category of the 1993 WEMU Jazz Competition and has appeared many times on “A Prairie Home Companion.” \nToday Gerald is one of America’s best-known performers\, entertainers and advocates for the ukulele. He’s released seven solo CDs\, published instructional materials\, and is very much in demand as a music festival instructor in the United States and abroad.\nhttp://www.geraldross.com/
