The Matchsellers & Red Tail Ring: Old Time Duos

Friday, April 5 @ 7:30 pm

 |

The Robin Theatre

Based in Old-Time music, two incredibly talented and charming duos will share the stage in this exciting twin bill.

The Matchsellers: "The first song I listened to was the one about the Pigeon and the Dove and I said "you're hired." -Larry Groce, NPR's Mountain Stage

Red Tail Ring: "The very best of the 21st century's minimalist and highly original folk music . . . a peerless duo." - American Roots UK.

The Matchsellers

As featured on NPR’s Mountain Stage Radio Show, The Bluegrass Situation and Bluegrass Today, the Matchsellers are Warsaw, Indiana native Andrew Morris and Julie Bates of Kansas City, Missouri. Their exciting, gritty, and often hilarious stage show has been developed over 6 years of touring across the US and Europe. The two met while working as American Cultural Ambassadors in Germany via the Fulbright Program and began exploring traditional American music from abroad. Since then, they have collected influences from various regional styles of American folk music including Bluegrass, Old-Time Fiddle, Hambone, Fiddlesticks, Cajun, Gospel and others. Their work has delved into subjects as academic as “German-American Musical Exchange” and as wild as “Science Fiction Bluegrass”. While a focus on humor and absurdity permeates their show, they are dedicated interpreters of tradition whose excellent musicianship, songwriting and taste are never overshadowed.

Red Tail Ring

Red Tail Ring: “Old-Time Roots; New-Time Sound.” Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp of Red Tail Ring create lush, intricate arrangements of original folk music and traditional ballads with banjo, fiddle, guitar, and close harmonies.

The Michigan-based band is fresh off their fourth full-length studio release, Fall Away Blues. Featuring new songwriting fused with old-time and country blues themes, the album tackles topical subjects such as gun violence and environmentalism as well as age-old questions of place and love. Red Tail Ring “doesn’t just pay homage to vintage folk and roots music: The Kalamazoo duo breathes new life into it, channeling the power and charm of seminal material into its own original songs.” – John Sinkevics, LocalSpins.com

Since 2009, Red Tail Ring has performed their brand of acoustic roots all over the United States, traveled over seas to play in Australia, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Scotland, Finland, and England and has also appeared at some of the most notable festivals and venues that the US has to offer, such as The Ark, Club Passim, Caffe Lena, the Indiana Fiddlers Gathering, Wheatland Music Festival, and Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival.
